RISD offers its students a Wintersession travel opportunity for credit that is conducted both on an individual basis and as group endeavors to a wide range of locations over a period of six weeks. In the past five years, the students have traveled to Paris, Greece, Italy, Peru, Edinburgh, and Mexico. The individual travel course is a proposal based investigation that is approved by the department and implemented as a thesis endeavor. The group courses are offered in the Fall semester and are cross disciplinary student and faculty efforts. Currently we have two consistently offered travel courses; one is an exchange program with the Edinburgh College of Art and another is a design build effort of a sculpture and culinary garden with Carol and Sol LeWitt in Italy.
Research Studios have included global explorations in Bangladesh, Greece, and public
academic partnerships with the Rhode Island Economic Development Foundation for
projects along the Blackstone River in Providence, RI, and design build projects with the
Carroll School for the Blind, the Boston Schoolyard Initiative.
